Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director, Emergency/Trauma Service (Director), under the general direction of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), directs the management and operation of the Emergency Department (ED) and coordinates all the health care services required for an organized, multidisciplinary team approach to the care of traumatically injured or ill patients in need of emergency treatment. Serves as the trauma coordinator and represents St. Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) with assistance from the CNO at the local, regional, and State level. This position requires frequent contact with other hospitals, department directors, physicians, and CNO. Contact with clinical patient care staff, patients and families, Medical Staff, regional and state emergency services, health care facilities, and government agencies will be necessary. The Director must instill high value for professional nursing practices as a role model within the Patient Care Services Division and be highly visible to Department and Medical Staff.

PRIMARY (ESSENTIAL) DUTIES

  1. Directs the comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to services provided to patients accessing the ED including individuals who have been traumatically injured. Care delivery through this service shall reflect the philosophy and mission of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, the nursing philosophy, as well as the philosophy of the ED.
  2. Maintains a current knowledge of State, Federal, and regulatory agency standards associated with the delivery of emergency care; including the Washington and Idaho trauma care standards, Total Joint Commission (TJC) emergency and nursing standards, as along with all other applicable Federal and State standards associated with the delivery of emergency services.
  3. Provides recommendations to the CNO the strategic goals and objectives for emergency and trauma services.
  4. Develops, analyzes, and modifies ED quality improvement programs and practices in conjunction with the Director of Quality, providing support and input to the Emergency Services Committee to facilitate interdepartmental and medical quality improvement activities.
  5. Establishes effective and appropriate mechanisms in response to patient inquiries regarding health care concerns and requests for illness-related advice.
  6. Maintains effective working relationships with pre-hospital care providers to assure the scale of service is continuously improving and responsive to community needs.

  9. Maintains current knowledge regarding the necessary clinical skills needed to lead a multidisciplinary trauma team to provide emergent, critical, and trauma care consistent with State (Washington and Idaho) and national standards for a Level II trauma hospital.
  10. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients within the Department
  11. Develops and refines a systematic approach to the delivery of patient care which is based upon sound rationale associated with scope of practice, role clarity, and cost-effectiveness.
  12. Assures the competency of the ED staff, providing direction to the group and individuals regarding education, certification, and other training needs.
